Submission Guidelines
Manuscripts can be submitted either electronically or by mail. To submit a manuscript electronically, please save your title page, manuscript, figures, tables, graphics and illustrations as a PDF file (version 4.0) and send as an attachment to Dr. Terry Graham at cjap@uoguelph.ca.
Alternatively, authors may submit four copies of the manuscript to Dr. Terry Graham, Office of the Editor-in-Chief, CJAP/RCPA, Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, N1G 2W1 Canada. With the initial submission, submit a copy of the manuscript on a 3.5-in. high-density diskette labeled with the author’s name, title of the manuscript and the software information.
All manuscript submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter that contains the following:
i) Corresponding author’s name, title of manuscript, mailing address, email address, and fax and phone numbers. ii) A statement that verifies the manuscript has not been submitted elsewhere for publication. iii) A statement that verifies that all authors have read and approved of the manuscript, and have contributed significantly to the research of the submitted manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts that fail to ensure the above statements will not be processed.
The authors are invited to list up to 4 suggested reviewers and must include each reviewer’s address, telephone and fax numbers and email address. Authors may also suggest up to 2 reviewers by whom they do not wish to have their manuscripts reviewed. Manuscripts not accepted for publication will not be returned.

Authors may submit manuscripts in English or French. The manuscripts, including references and tables, should be double-spaced on 21.5- by 28-cm (8.5- by 11-in.) paper with 1-in. wide margins. Clearly label all tables and figures and include them on separate pages. Number the pages consecutively as follows: title page, abstract, text, references, footnotes, acknowledgments, figure captions, tables, and figures. The title page should contain only the title, name of author(s), institutional affiliation(s), and complete address, phone, and fax number of the author who is to receive the galleys. Use international convention (SI) for abbreviations and units of measures. Superscripts and subscripts should be explained in notes in the margin when necessary. Please adhere to the following page limitations:
Research contributions: 15 pp., excluding the 200-word abstract, key words, references, tables, and figures. Rapid communications: 8 pp., including a 75-word abstract, and a maximum of 20 references and 4 tables and/or figures (in total). Technical notes: 3 pp., including a 75-word abstract and a summary. Reviews: Length is at the editor’s discretion. Letters to the editor: 2 pp. Ph.D. Theses abstracts: Abstracts of recent Ph.D. theses completed in Canadian research laboratories can be submitted for publication. They should include the title, student’s full name, present position and location as well as the advisor’s name. Abstracts may be in English or French.
Abstracts: All articles must have abstracts (maximum, 200 words) suitable for use in abstracting journals without revision. Authors who can submit abstracts in both English and French are encouraged to do so. Authors must also provide up to 5 key words or phrases that are not part of the title, which should be placed directly below the abstract.
Ethics: Research on human subjects should include a statement in the manuscript indicating that subjects gave informed consent, according to a protocol approved by an appropriate human research ethics committee. Refer to http://www.wma.net/e/policy/17-c_e.html or http://www.cirp.org/library/ethics/helsinki/.
Research on animals should include an assurance of humane treatment, as outlined in Care of Experimental Animals – A Guide for Canada (for a free copy: Canadian Council on Animal Care, 151 Slate St., Ottawa, K1P 5H3, Canada). For more details see http://www.ccac.ca/guides/english/toc_v1.htm.
Tables and Figures: Tables should not duplicate the text or each other. They should be placed on separate pages and numbered sequentially. Vertical rules should be avoided. Figures no larger than 20.5 x 25.5 cm (8 x 10 in.) should be professional in appearance with crisp, clear lines and lettering of sufficient quality to be legible when reduced. Hand drawings or hand lettering are not acceptable. On a gummed label affixed to the back, number each figure and include author name and brief title; indicate the top of the figure. Submit one glossy print of each figure and include photocopies with other copies of the manuscript.
References: References in the text must follow Physiology Society format (e.g., Davis, 1994). If the reference has more than 2 authors, list only the first author and “et al.,” (e.g., Quinn et al., 1990). Authors should limit the citations substantiating any point in the text to three. If there is more than one reference by the same author in the same year, distinguish the references with a, b, c after the year (e.g., Jones, 1991a, 1991b). References must be in alphabetical order according to author surname.
