Author Guidelines

The International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education (IJARE) invites the submission of original manuscripts on research and educational articles focusing on people’s participation in noncompetitive aquatic programs, the use of aquatic facilities, and the teaching and learning of aquatic knowledge and skills. The journal typically does not publish articles about nonhuman aspects of aquatics or on issues concerned primarily with improving performance in competitive aquatics sports such as swimming, diving, water polo, and sailing.

In the Research section we are interested in research reports that study health and safety of people’s participation in all types of aquatic activities; aquatic technology including facilities, equipment, and supplies; participation in aquatic activities, including the factors influencing participation and the consequences of participation for various populations; and instruction of aquatic knowledge and skills.

In the Education section IJARE publishes practitioner-oriented articles about the teaching of aquatic knowledge and skills. These articles may take the form of experiential reports, clinical and observational studies, reviews of the literature, and editorial statements of opinion or position statements. All manuscripts are reviewed by two or more reviewers and members of the editorial board for their perceived contribution to the field.

Authors preparing manuscripts to be submitted for review and publication in IJARE must adhere to the guidelines published in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed., 2001). Copies are available in most academic libraries (inquire at the reference desk) and can be purchased in most bookstores. Authors also are encouraged to refer to past issues of the journal for concrete examples of the style to be used for citations and references, as well as for various types of articles.

Submitted manuscripts should be original works not previously published or simultaneously submitted to another journal. Authors submit electronically via Manuscript CentralAuthors can also reach the Manuscript Central Web site through a link on the Human Kinetics Journals Web page: http://www.humankinetics.com/products/journals/, clicking on the IJARE link. First-time authors will create an account by following the directions on the ManuscriptCentral page. No print manuscripts or e-mail attachments can be accepted. Authors of manuscripts accepted for publication must transfer copyright to Human Kinetics, Inc.

Writing Style: Manuscripts should be written in the first or third person using the active voice. Writing should be concise and direct while avoiding jargon and abbreviations except those that are commonly recognized in aquatics (such as using WSI to refer to water safety instructors). Manuscripts should be written in standard English. Lead authors who are nonnative English speakers should seek the assistance of a colleague or collaborator experienced in writing for English-language scientific journals. Manuscripts must be carefully proofread before submission. Failure to follow these basic writing-style guidelines may result in your manuscript being returned by the Editor, unreviewed.

Including Multimedia: Short video clips may now be submitted to illustrate your article in the online version of the International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education (IJARE). Files may be submitted through ManuscriptCentral for review as part of the manuscript; each digital video file should be designated and uploaded as a “supplementary file,” and should be no larger than 15–20 MB (or 5–10 seconds, depending upon compression). Video should be submitted in either .WMV or QuickTime (.mov) format with standard frame size of 320 × 240 pixels and frame rate of 30 frames per second. You also should indicate in the cover letter accompanying your ManuscriptCentral submission that you have submitted a video file.

Digital material from a source not original to the author must be accompanied by a statement from the copyright holder giving you permission to publish it; the source and copyright holder must be credited in the article.

Human Kinetics will inspect all video submissions for quality and technical specifications, and we reserve the right to reject any video submission that does not meet quality standards and specifications.

Figures and Tables: In graphs, use black and white only, no shading or color. Keep labels proportionate with the size of the figure on the journal page, which is 4.5 in. wide. Digital images should be 300 dpi at full size for photos and 600 dpi for line art. Format tables in the table function of your word-processing program rather than aligning columns in text with tabs and spaces or using text boxes.

Complimentary Copies: Authors of IJARE will be provided with a 30-day complimentary online subscription to IJARE rather than a complimentary print issue. This will allow authors to access content that could only appear online, as well as giving them an opportunity to view the entire archive of back issues of IJARE, which is available to every subscriber during the 30 days of free access. The new system of providing 30-day online complimentary subscriptions to authors will take effect beginning with the first issue of the 2009 volume year.
